By Bob Hurst Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire wasn't about to take a chance on losing a starting pitcher during a divisional playoff race. So in Sunday's game against the Oakland A's, Gardenhire removed Kevin Slowey despite the fact that Slowey was throwing a no-hitter. The Twins manager was booed by Minnesota fans for making the move. Jon Rauch came in to try for a combined no-hitter, but allowed a double to the second batter he faced. The Twins ended up winning the game 4-2. "I would boo me too," Gardenhire said. "I took a pitcher out with a no-hitter going. But I would do it [...]

By Bob Hurst There hasn't been much to celebrate in Baltimore this season, so when Adam Jones hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning last Friday night, the Orioles mobbed Jones and jumped around like they had won the AL East. It was Baltimore's fourth straight win, matching its season high, and made new manager Buck Showalter 4-0 with the team. The Orioles finished their homestand at 6-1 and won their seventh in eight games under Showalter on Tuesday night. Everything's looking a lot more cheerful in the clubhouse of the team with baseball's worst record (39-74 [...]

By Bob Hurst Yawn. Another no-hitter was thrown this week in Major League Baseball. In the Year of the Pitcher, no-hitters are becoming nearly as frequent as those pitched in high school softball games. There have now been five thrown this season, including two perfect games. Detroit's Armando Galarraga would have had a perfect game last month, but lost it with one out to go in the ninth inning on a bad call at first base by umpire Jim Joyce. Tampa Bay's Matt Garza is the latest one to do it, shutting down the Tigers in a 5-0 win at Tropicana Field on Monday night. And that's not a [...]

By Bob Hurst Oakland A's pitcher Dallas Braden gave New York Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez and earful in April after Rodriguez ran across the mound while returning to first base. On Monday, Braden was ripping into the A's marketing department for a t-shirt that's been on sale in the A's gift shop, in advance of this week's series with the Yankees. The phrase printed on the shirt is "Get Off My Mound," the words Braden shouted at Rodriguez in a game at Oakland on April 22. It also has a silhouette of a left-handed pitcher, but not Braden's name. "I think we all understand where [...]

By Bob Hurst As the weather heats up, so do tempers. Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano was caught on camera in yet another meltdown, yelling at first baseman Derrek Lee and storming through the dugout after the first inning of last Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox. And Tampa Bay's B.J. Upton got into a heated discussion with teammate Evan Longoria in Sunday's game against Arizona. Zambrano's tirade was triggered in the first inning, when he apparently became angry at Lee, and third baseman Aramis Ramirez for not diving for hard-hit balls down the line. Zambrano also gave up [...]

By Bob Hurst There's more than one thing that's steaming in "Hotlanta" these days. Atlanta's baseball team -- the Braves -- finished the month of May off with a flourish, going 16-4 after starting the season 13-18. After Monday's win over Philadelphia, the Braves had made up 7 1/2 games in the standings to take over first place in the NL East by a half-game over the Phillies. "There's a lot of baseball left, but we have made a great recovery," said Braves manager Bobby Cox. "We bent a little bit, but we never broke." Chipper Jones, who went into Tuesday's game with eight hits in [...]
