NAVAL AIR FACILITY EL CENTRO, June 12, 2012: The base launches its 2012 Feds Feed Families Food Drive.  Feds Feed Families is a government-wide effort led by the Chief Human Capital Officers (CHCO) Council.  All Federal employees are encouraged to participate.  http://www.fedsfeedfamilies.gov/

Last year’s nationwide goal was 2,000,000 pounds of food and federal employees nationwide well exceeded that goal by collecting 5,793,446 pounds of food for local food banks.  In that same time period, NAF El Centro’s goal was 1,000 pounds of food and the installation ended the drive with 5,900 pounds of food going directly to the Imperial Valley Food Bank.

While describing the program, NAF El Centro’s Chaplain and Food Drive Chairman, LT Jared Smith said, “As a Global Force for Good, our Navy is sometimes called to fight terrorism and piracy abroad.  At other times we are called to fight hunger here at home.  Regardless of our assignment, we must meet it with the same level of honor, courage, and commitment, for serving our community is just another way for us to serve our country.  The war on hunger continues in Imperial County with 31% of residents at risk of hunger–with 48% of these being children.  In supporting our local Imperial County Food Bank we aid them in serving 20,000 people in need each and every month.”

Personnel can contribute in two ways. They can drop of the food items in pre-staged food bins or by cash contributions. Each dollar collected is worth five pounds of food. The Chaplain’s Office will accept donations via the Religious Offering Fund or a direct donation can be made at http://www.ivfoodbank.org/.

The food drive will continue through August 31, 2012.
