CBP Officers at Calexico Ports Intercept over $1.7 Million worth of Narcotics over Weekend

Calexico, Calif. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Calexico ports of entry seized over 1.7 million dollars worth of narcotics and arrested eight individuals over the weekend during seven separate smuggling attempts.

One of the seizures occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, September 23, at the Calexico East port of entry. A CBP officer conducting inspections of vehicles and travelers referred a 29-year-old male U.S. citizen driving a red 1995 Toyota pick-up truck with an all terrain vehicle (quad) on the bed for further examination.

During the intensive examination, a canine team screened both vehicles and the canine alerted to the quad. CBP officers subsequently discovered 30 wrapped packages of methamphetamine concealed inside the engine compartment of the all terrain vehicle. The weight of the narcotic was 16 pounds with a street value of approximately $176,000.

CBP officers arrested the driver, a resident of San Diego, California, for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt.

Another seizure occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, at the downtown port of entry. CBP officers with the port’s Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Team (A-TCET) were roving vehicles when a canine alerted to a grey 2005 Ford Ranger pick-up as it waited in line for inspection. CBP officers referred both vehicle and driver, a 26-year-old male Mexican citizen, for further examination.

During an intensive inspection of the vehicle, CBP officers found 30 wrapped packages of cocaine concealed in the vehicle’s floor area and side walls of the cab. The weight of the narcotic was 73 pounds with a street value of approximately $657,000.

CBP officers arrested the driver, a resident of Tecate, Baja California, for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt.

The violators were turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and transported to the Imperial County Jail where they await arraignment.

CBP placed an immigration hold on the Mexican citizen to initiate removal from the United States at the conclusion of his criminal proceeding.

CBP seized the vehicles and narcotics.
