In just a couple of weeks a world class company, Grupo La Moderna, will start construction in Calexico that will create hundreds of jobs and a big investment to Calexico.

Last Wednesday was the inauguration of a La Moderna Plant in the Mexicali Valley. The investment will create hundreds of jobs to Baja California thanks to this state-of-the-art facility. Present in this event was the Governor of Baja California Jose Guadalupe Osuana Millan and Mexicali Mayor Francisco Perez-Tejada Padilla.

Also present was Calexico Mayor John Moreno who spoke about La Moderna and welcomed them to Calexico. La Moderna will be located at Towncenter Plaza and will start constructing in the next couple of weeks. The Group saw Calexico as their ideal place for their production and distribution. The land deal with La Moderna in Calexico was closed by former Mayor Alex Perrone.

“This is an excellent opportunity for economic development in Calexico.” Mayor Moreno said, “La Moderna is known as a first class operation and our doors are open because we are neighbors, friends, and family.” Moreno also said that Calexico should be proud that La Moderna chose Calexico as their home and said the City will continue to collaborate with them for the continued success.

La Moderna CEO, Eduardo Monroy, told the Calexico Chronicle that the first step is to build a $ 3 million dollar warehouse in Calexico that will employ twenty people in its first year. In the next three to five years, Monroy said, La Moderna plans to construct a pasta factory in Calexico and will create 150 jobs with an investment to $50 million dollars to the local economy.

Grupo La Moderna, engages in the production and commercialization of wheat-based food and cereals in Mexico. The company operates through four divisions: Pasta, Cookie, Milling, and Packaging. The Pasta division produces approximately 200 types of pasta and owns 8 brands in this segment: La Moderna, De Luigi, La Perla, Cora, Pasti-Lara, Rex, Anatina, Giovanni Primo, and Allegra.

This division also manufactures own-brand products for various prominent supermarket chains. The Cookie division produces six different lines of cookies in approximately 100 varieties, which include wire-cut, marshmallow, sandwich-style, basic, wafers, and salted. The Milling division principally engages in wheat milling for the production of baking and cookie flours, semolina, and wheat byproducts, as well as rice flour. The Packaging division produces primarily flexible packaging and cardboard boxes.

The company sells its products through supermarkets, distributors, wholesalers, and companies of the public sector.
