WESTMORLAND, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents discovered approximately three pounds of methamphetamine and $42,000 of U.S. currency Tuesday.

At approximately 10 a.m., a Border Patrol canine team performing a cursory inspection alerted to a vehicle at the Intestate 8 checkpoint located approximately 27 miles east of Calexico.  Further investigation led agents to discover a hidden compartment containing approximately $42,000 of undeclared currency.

The second incident occurred at approximately 12 p.m., when a commercial bus was referred to secondary inspection by Border Patrol agents at the Highway 86 Border Patrol checkpoint, near Westmorland.  All occupants of the bus were interviewed and agents discovered that one of the passengers had more than three pounds of methamphetamine under his shirt.  The methamphetamine is valued at approximately $105,000.

The cash and vehicle in the first incident were seized under suspicion of bulk cash smuggling and the subject was processed at the Calexico Border Patrol Station.  The second subject was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration along with the methamphetamine.
