Agents Seize Marijuana at Highway 86 Checkpoint

INDIO, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio station seized approximately $950,000 worth of marijuana on Sunday.

At approximately 5:45 a.m., a semi-tractor trailer being driven by a 32-year-old male Guatemalan citizen illegally present in the United States approached the primary inspection area at the Highway 86 checkpoint.  The semi-truck was referred for secondary inspection after a canine team alerted to the vehicle

A search of the trailer revealed several duffel bags concealed under a load of corn.  Upon closer inspection of the duffel bags, marijuana with a total weight of more than 1,100 pounds was discovered.

The driver was placed under arrest and was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration along with the marijuana and semi-tractor trailer.
