American Red Cross and City of El Centro Parks and Recreation Program Team Up
El Centro: The American Red Cross Imperial Service Center is offering a two-day Babysitting Boot Camp for girls and boys ages 11-17, to give them all the tools they will need to be the best babysitter in the neighborhood. The Babysitter Boot Camp (BBC) will include hands-on activities, exciting videos, role playing and lively discussions for those babysitting infants up through school-aged children.
Participating youth will learn such things as feeding, diapering and dressing infants and children. The standard Babysitting course will be enhanced with added training modules which will include certification in Adult/Infant/Child CPR, First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Essentials.
The training will cover six areas which will enhance the participants skills in the following:
Leadership: The fundamental leadership skills necessary for safe, effective babysitting such as, role modeling, respect, communicating decision making and decision taking.
The Business of Babysitting: All the basics on the business of babysitting including assessing your skills, finding work, creating a resume, figuring out how much to charge, interviewing and professional behavior.
Safe and Sound on the Job: Extensive coverage of safety issues related to babysitting, including telephone and personal safety, preventing and emergencies inside and outside the home, fire safety, rural safety and safety in the kitchen.
Understanding Kids fro 0 to 10: Expanded childhood development and behavior section including information on how to select developmentally-appropriate activities, guide children in safe and effective play, encourage positive behavior, appropriately correct misbehavior and handle common behavioral challenges.
From Feeding to Bedtime: Caring for Kids: All the essentials of basic childcare, safe techniques for holding, carrying, feeding, diapering, dressing and bathing children and infants, as well as bed time routines and personal hygiene.
It’s an Emergency…Now What?: Covers life-threatening first aid emergencies and care for situations that babysitters will likely encounter, such as bee stings, allergic reactions, asthma and burns. Participants will learn the following CPR and first aid skills conscious check – child and infant conscious choking – child and infat, rescue breathing – child and infant and controlling external bleeding. Includes information on how to build your own babysitting kit.
This fun, weeklong event takes the standard babysitter’s training one step further, incorporating Infant and Child CPR and age appropriate safety training for your 11-17 year old as well as incorporating other safety training components.

At the end of the training the youth participants will have gained knowledge, skills and confidence to care for children in a variety of daily and emergency situations, and increase their earning potential as a babysitter.
Two Babysitter Boot Camp sessions will be offered: Session 1 will be held from June 28 to July 2 – Session 2 will be from July 12 to July 16. The course days and time for both sessions will be Monday through Friday, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm and will be held at the Adult Center located at 385 1st Street in El Centro.
