This Week in Baseball
By Bob Hurst Tampa Bay's start to this season is even better than its start in 2008, when the Rays went to their first World Series. Although it doesn't guarantee another trip to the Fall Classic, the Rays have served notice that they'll be in contention. Murderer of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas Sentenced
San Diego — A courtroom full of Border Patrol agents was present on Thursday morning at U.S. District Court for the sentencing of a teenager who was involved in the murder of Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas. Christian Daniel Castro-Alvarez, 17, pled guilty on November 20, 2009 and was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in the murder. The arrest and conviction of Castro-Alvarez was made possible through the efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California and the FBI San Diego Field Office. City of Holtville Monday, April 26 PICKING UP DIRT: Someone called police to report a subject on a dirt bike speeding around roads on the outskirts of town and driving recklessly. The caller was advised of his options. FAMILY PET: A female subject called police to report that the family dog was missing after she had left the gate open during the night. Holtville Middle School Gets Much-Needed Repairs Following Quake
By Betty Predmore During the past few weeks, Holtville Middle School has experienced a lot of damage brought on by the Easter quake and the recurring aftershocks. The initial damage was to the underground electrical wiring. One of the aftershocks that followed that initial quake caused the conduit containing the wires that fed to 12 of the classrooms to collapse. That left those classrooms without electricity. The wire damage repair cost approximately $79,587. Electrical work performed by D.W. Hibbert totalled $55,002 and there was a cost of $25,585 for concrete work done by AM [...]

El Centro Local Assistance Center Transitions to an SBA Disaster Loan Outreach Center
Ruben R. Imperial County Local Assistance Center will Close this week
Imperial County Officials Report that over 300 families have visited the Local Assistance Center since its opening. IMPERIAL COUNTY- Imperial County officials announced this morning that the Local Assistance Center (LAC) will remain open through Friday, April 30th due to scheduling issues at the location where the LAC was established. Unfortunately the LAC will not be open on Saturday May 1st as had been previously announced. The LAC opened its doors on Thursday, April 22nd and has been open every day except Sunday. Calexico Parents Upset Over Recent Post-Quake Decisions
By Mario Conde Calexico parents made it clear to school board president, Salvador Pacheco, last Sunday that they want to have a special meeting to know when schools are going to open and to take action on their five points of concern. In an event organized by parents at the Daniel Gutierrez Park in Calexico to celebrate the decision of the School District that students would not be moved around because of the earthquake. Huge Rebate to California Consumers Who Were Victims of the 2000-2001 Energy Crisis
Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced settlements that will bring $400 million in refunds for California consumers who were victimized by market manipulation and exorbitant prices during the energy crisis of 2000-2001. The two-part agreement with San Diego-based Sempra Energy will provide reimbursement of $270 million to California utility customers who each month pay off debt from the utility crisis on their gas and electric bills.
