CALEXICO, Calif. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Downtown Calexico port of entry stopped a suspected burglar from escaping to Mexico with goods stolen from a downtown Calexico business Thursday morning.
At approximately 6:40 a.m. while conducting outbound operations in the southbound lanes of Imperial Avenue, CBP officers noticed U.S. citizen Carlos Alberto Serna, 34, of Calexico, Calif., walking rapidly carrying a flat screen television. During an interview, Serna acted suspiciously and displayed nervous behavior. He was subsequently searched and various jewelry and sunglasses that appeared to be stolen were in his possession.
CBP contacted the Calexico Police Department; the officer who responded notified CBP officers that Serna was a suspect in the burglary of a downtown Calexico business. Serna was immediately arrested by Calexico police.
Calexico Port Director Billy Whitford said, “In addition to being vigilant of what or who is entering through our ports, we keep a watchful eye out for any contraband or in this case, stolen property, from crossing our exit points as well.”
