Brawley Defeats Holtville At Last Meet Of Season

Kekoa Gonsalves of Holtville has Brawley’s Jonathan Mejia head in a lock during their 215 match. Gonsalves would win this match with an 11-8 decision.

Brawley’s Leo Torres finishes off Holtville’s Julian Daniel quickly in this heavyweight match. The pin came less than 30 seconds into the match.

At 125, Stephanie Rios of Holtville prepares to wrestle Wildcat Cy Rogers. Rogers would win this match by pinning Rios 0:27 seconds into their match.

In the final match of the evening, Brawley’s Spencer Price attempts a takedown that Holtville’s Devin Lanetti manages to avoid. Lanetti won this match with a 6-3 decision.

he IVL division for the 16th time against Southwest the week before and earning a second place overall at last weekend’s Holtville Rotary Tournament, Brawley looked to give some of their wrestlers some needed mat time and some last minute training for the upcoming Helix tournament and CIF-San Diego Section Division 3 finals.

Holtville came into the meet looking for a strong performance from some of their wrestlers going into the CIF San Diego Division 4 tournament.

Starting at 135, Brawley scored a third round fall when Richard Ramirez pinned Holtville’s Ricardo Landeros with 45 seconds left in the match.  At 140, Wildcat Luis Banda earned a 16-9 decision over the Viking’s Danny Barraza while at 145, Brawley took a walkover with Jacob Gonzales, making the overall score 15-0.

Holtville’s first points came at 152 when Robbie Phillips pinned J.J. Morales of Brawley 3:35 into the match.  This was followed by a first round pin for the Vikings as Julian Martinez took down Gabriel Ramirez in less than 50 seconds into their 160 lbs. match.  At this point, the score was 15-12 for Brawley.

Brawley answered with a pin of their own at 171 when Abraham Lopez pinned Robert Gibbs 35 seconds into the second period.

This was followed by two Holtville wins at 189, when Cesar Rincon won by default (injury) against Brian Centeno and Kekoa Gonsalves defeated Jonathan Mejia by an 11-8 decision at 215.

With the score 21-21, Brawley seemed to go into a new gear and scored five consecutive wins, starting with Leo Torres getting a pin less than 30 seconds into his heavyweight match with Julian Daniel.  This continued with Brawley’s second walkover by Eric Wong at 103.

Brawley continued to score when Tyler Mayo defeated Holtville’s Nathan Buford with a 12-2 superior decision at 112.  This was followed by a pair of pins when Wildcat Chayanne Chan took down Viking Jeremy Garcia in 26 seconds during their 119 match and Cy Rogers pinned Stephanie Rios in 0:27 seconds into their match at 125.  This made the overall score 49-21 in favor of Brawley.

In the last match of the evening, at 130, Holtville’s Devin Lanetti scored Holtville’s final points as he wrestled Spencer Price of Brawley to a 6-3 decision.

Both teams now begin preparations for the CIF-San Diego Section Division Tournaments.
